RICHARD DADD: Mad Artist / Patricide / Surrealist / Art History / Biography - By David Greysmith

Richard Dadd (1817–1886) was a prominent Victorian-era English artist known for his intricate, detailed, and often ethereal scenes of fairies, traditional folklore, and oriental themes - He was a rising artist and a recognized talent early on - but his life changed dramatically after he suffered  a Mental breakdown in 1843, leading to the murder of his father and life-long confinement in  Mental institutions - where he continued his artwork as therapy and eventually died in confinement.

He had several different painting and illustration styles - some of his work looks historical and very traditional while other work seems to be created by a whole different person - bizarre and extremely detailed w/ various layers and miniature Fairy worlds within other miniature worlds... as you notice more and more small creatures and other beings hidden in the flowers and leaves of these paintings....'The Fairy Feller's Master Stroke' is probably his most infamous painting - and seems to be a reference to the killing of his Father / Patricide - (see Book Cover)

This book traces his entire life and career in detail - an excellent biography of this little known Artist - little known, no doubt because of his dark past - Mostly B&W w/ some Color Illustrations. Beautiful Book !! - See Photos Please.
