Jean Genet was mainly known as an author who wrote openly gay Novels early on - but he was also interested in film - and eventually made his only movie: 'Un Chant d' Amour' in 1950 - the film was a celebration of homosexual desire, criminal impulse and the desire to transcend physical existence - in a time when such activity was not socially acceptable - even illegal - The film was banned as obscene - but gradually trends changed and the movie became more accepted over time - eventually becoming a focal point for gay rights, sexual freedom and free speech.
